I have the China Glaze Gone West Collection to share today. It is an 8-piece collection full of Fall goodness. China Glaze describes this collection as “the best of the west with country-cool neutrals and a pretty posse of rosy rebels”. Sounds good to me! As always, I will list these in alphabetical order. Sadly, you will have to make do with my rather poor color-description skills.
Buffalo Bills, Bills, Bills gave me a lot of trouble, description-wise. When I started swatching it, I thought it was a purple-toned brown with gold shimmer. Once I had it on my nails and looked at it in the sunlight, I realized it is a bit of a chameleon. At some angles, it looks like a green-toned bronze. At others, it looks like a shimmery reddish brown. So, the shimmer that looked gold to me at first glance must actually be a color-shifty shimmer. What??? I know!! So cool!
So … I have several pictures of this one in an attempt to show some of those color shifts. They are readily apparent on the nail in person, but I am not sure how well they will come through in my photos. This collection was one of the first I swatched in my new house, so I was still getting used to the new lighting situation in my office/mani cave. (Who am I kidding? I’m still getting used to it.)
I liked the formula on this polish. I didn’t have any problems with application, and it was opaque for me in 2 easy coats.
I like this polish. I like it a LOT. I think the gold shows beautifully on the nail. It gives the polish a glow that is oh-so pretty. The greenish-bronze and reddish-brown shifts were a nice surprise. I don’t know if my eyes were just playing tricks on me or what, but I felt like I could see all of that action happening on my nails as the light played across them. You guys know I’m a sucker for browns. And this one grabbed me by the heartstrings right away. Also, can we talk about how cool it is to see a mainstream brand make a shimmery-shifty polish? Because it is Way Cool.
Campfired Up! is a brick red creme. This isn’t your typical dusty brick red, as it seems to have a nice bit of pink in the color mix, which gives it a lighter and brighter look on the nail.
This polish has a good formula. I didn’t have any issues with application, and it built well on the nail for me. It was opaque in 2 easy coats. This polish is really opaque, so you might be able to get away with 1 coat, depending on application technique and nail length.
This is a pretty red! I don’t think it’s anything unique or unusual, but I like how there is some pink in this polish. It softens the brick or maroon color and gives the polish a bright and vibrant look on the nail. This type of red feels very “Fall” to me.
Cattle Drive Me Crazy is a midnight blue with a pearly luster finish.
This polish has a nice formula that is opaque in 1-2 coats. I used 2 coats for my swatch picture, but I think you could get this one done in 1. There were some brush strokes, but I found them to be fairly minor and not distracting on the nail. Overall, this has a rich formula that leans slightly thick.
I am not sure how I feel about this polish. I love the color depth and the dark look it has on the nail. This color is right up my alley. You guys know blues are always my jam.
I am not sure I like the finish on this one once it dries. I feel like it tends to highlight any imperfections, and I definitely do NOT have perfect nails. So that’s a strike against it for me. There is also something about this type of finish that I find jarring on my own nails. Of course, these are just my first impressions and opinions. I may end up loving this one once I wear it in a manicure. Overall, it’s a pretty polish with a nice formula.
Cowboy, Bye is a brown with a gray undertone. This polish has shimmer that shifts from red to bronze and holographic glitters or micro flakes. This polish has a good formula. It built easily on the nail, and it was opaque for me in 2 coats.
You guys!! I freaking LOVE this polish. I might even go so far as to say this is the super star of the collection. It is pretty exciting to see a mainstream brand create a polish that has shifting shimmer, multiple color tones, and holographic all together in one gorgeous package. When you toss in a great formula … Mind. Blown.
I love the depth and richness of this brown. I love the red undertones. I love that it has some grays. And I love, love, LOVE that shifty, rainbow goodness it has when the sun hits it just right.
Gold Mine Your Business is a rich gold with holographic. This is not a brassy or bright gold. It has a lovely color tone that is almost like an antique gold, but with just a touch more brightness to it. It also has holographic in it that complements the shimmery finish beautifully.
Formula-wise, this polish is super sheer. This is basically a delicate gold shimmer plus holographic in a clear base, which becomes evident with the first swipe of the brush across the nail. Even so, it builds well and easily to full opacity in 3-4 coats. I used 4 coats for my swatch photo, but I would wear this at 3 with no problems.
I bet I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking this one should be a hard pass because it’s a 3-4 coater, and no one has time for that if the polish isn’t an indie. Normally, I would agree with you. But this one is so, so worth the extra time and effort. This polish is super pretty on the nail. It is shimmery and delicate. The holographic is beautiful against the gold base, and I love this color. It is beautifully rich without being brassy, and it looks soft and delicate when it dries. I love this one.
I wonder how this polish would look as a topper. I can’t help thinking it would be lovely over a black or dark brown. Or even a deep and dark purple. Hmmm …
Lawless & Flawless is a light and sheer rosy pink with pink shimmer. This polish has a good formula. It was easy to apply on the nail, and it built well to full opacity on its own. But this is a sheer polish that needs 2-3 coats. I used 3 for my picture, and I think I would probably use 3 for real-life wear, too.
Light and airy pinks are not usually my thing. But I liked this polish a lot more than I thought I would. I love all things rosy-grandma toned in color, as you guys know. This is pretty and delicate on the nail. It has a soft, kind of girly look to it that appealed to me. I also like how it is neutral but with a little something extra in the shimmer.
Prairie Tale Ending is a light taupe. This one reminds me of a “coffee and cream” sort of color. This polish has a nice formula. It is creamy, rich, and easy to apply. This is not usually the case with polishes in this color family. I generally find them finicky and difficult to work with, but this one didn’t give me any problems. It was opaque in 2 coats. I know this is crazy talk, but I think it could be opaque in 1 if you use thicker coats and are careful with application.
This is the only polish in the collection that left me feeling a little bit “meh” in terms of the color. It’s not unusual or unique in any way. Compared to the rest of the collection, you could even call this one boring. And yet, this polish has a great formula, especially for a light-toned neutral. It is a pretty neutral, and I like the lightness in it.
Take the High Rodeo is a rosy-toned mauve with gold shimmer. This polish has a good formula. It builds nicely on the nail, and it is easy to apply. It was opaque for me in 2 easy coats.
Good, googley gosh! I am such a fan for this polish. I love the mix of rose and gold in here. It is so, so, so pretty on the nail. The shimmer shows up well, and I think this polish is a perfect transition from Summer into Fall. It is delicate and girly, and it makes my heart happy. I had to wear this one in a manicure right away after buying it. And so, that’s what I did. I got lots of compliments on this manicure.
What do you think about this collection? I am sure it comes as no surprise when I tell you I am a super fan. I think it’s a great collection. It was unexpected and fun to see a mainstream brand release a collection filled with shimmers and color shifts and even some holographic. I thought this collection was a lot of fun to swatch, and I am going to love wearing all of these in full manicures. The good formulas in here are icing on a very tasty cake.
I have a few favorites from this collection: Take the High Rodeo … Buffalo Bills, Bills, Bills … Gold Mine Your Business … and Cowboy, Bye all grabbed me by the heart. I can see each of these remaining a favorite for me over the long term. In terms of unique factor, I feel like both Buffalo Bills, Bills, Bills and Cowboy, Bye are ones you don’t want to miss.
What about you guys? Have you purchased anything from this collection? Do you have any favorites? I would love to hear all about it!
