I don’t have any nail mail to share today, so I decided to start my week off with a Topic Tuesday. But on a Monday! Plus, it’s an old Topic Tuesday. This was the topic for last Tuesday, October 16. Oh yeah. I’m full of twists and turns on the blog today. It’s always a wild and wacky time in here. Or, in my mind, anyhow.
I have to be honest up front and say that I’m not much of a Halloween person. I’m not anti-Halloween. I’ve just never been all-in for this particular holiday. I think it comes from growing up out in the country. There is no trick-or-treating when your nearest neighbor is 3-5 miles away. And I’ve never been much for dressing up in costumes. When my daughter was younger, I did the Halloween decorations thing around our house. And we always did fun stuff for her during the holiday. Plus, we live in an urban area, which means she got to enjoy the fun of dressing up in a costume and wandering the streets with her friends to beg for candy — ha, ha!
When it comes to nails and nail art, I definitely feel the Halloween spirit! I have been a little disorganized this year, so I haven’t gotten in as much spooky nail art as I normally would. But I enjoy the heck out of Halloween-themed nail art. And there are certain colors that seem to feel more appropriate than usual for this time of year.
*I have a mix of old and new swatch photos in this post, as I haven’t re-swatched everything in my stash yet. Apologies for that.*
China Glaze, It’s Alive! is one of my favorite, favorite polishes for Halloween. I think most people are hot and heavy over Zombie Zest, and I love that polish, too. But It’s Alive! is the one that unexpectedly captured my heart. I love everything about this polish, from the murky and slightly messy green base to the scads of different-sized glitters. This polish doesn’t look like much in the bottle to me, but I love the visual punch it packs once it is on the nail. There are layers and layers of depth and dimension in here. I also like that I only need 2 coats of this polish for full opacity, versus needing at least 3 for Zombie Zest.
This one is more of a color combination. I love a vampy red paired with black at Halloween. This manicure was my favorite Halloween-themed mani last year. This is OPI, I’m Not Really a Waitress, and I stamped over it with a bat design in black. It’s a simple manicure, but I love how it packs a visual punch. There is something mysterious and a little bit “dangerous” to me about this color combination.
Speaking of a vampy, sort of sexy, dangerous red, this beauty ticks every category. This is Colores de Carol, Vampire Nightmare. This beauty is from an older Colores de Carol Halloween Collection. And it is the perfect shade of oxidized, iron-toned red. Not to be gross or anything, but it looks like dried blood, which is perfect for a Halloween polish. And the scattering of gold glitters is the perfect accompaniment. This is one of my favorite Halloween reds!
Colores de Carol, The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight. My list of Halloween polishes could never be complete without this stunner. Because how can you “do” Halloween without an orange? And this is the sassiest, richest, most gorgeous orange I have ever seen. Ever! It has the prettiest burned tone to it that combines with the holographic to sizzle right off the nail. It is gorgeous under nail art. But it is also perfection on its own. My love for this one knows no boundaries!
I am pretty sure this beautiful orange is part of Colores de Carol’s core line now. So you can still snag a bottle for yourself, if you don’t already have it!
Rounding out my list of five favorites is this gray beauty. This is Colores de Carol, Hydra of Lerna. I don’t necessarily think of gray as a traditional Halloween color. I really like purples at Halloween, along with the more traditional oranges, reds, and blacks. So I intended to include a purple on my list.
Well, plans were made to be broken, right? Because the moment I thought about this gray beauty, I knew it needed to be on my list. This is a polish I wear all year long, but it feels even more appropriate for the Halloween season. The combination of this tone of gray with the color-shifting flakes and the holographic looks exactly like monster skin. Or, you know, what I imagine monster skin would look like. So spooky and perfect!!
So there you have it! Five of my favorite polishes or color combinations for Halloween. You guys already know my list of Halloween Love is much longer than this! When I sat down to do this post, I didn’t have much of a plan. I decided to wing it and see what happened, and these were the polishes that jumped to mind first and foremost. Also, I’m super proud of myself for sticking to just five!
So what about you guys? What are your spooky favorites for Halloween?
